I`m playing mostly house concerts now - they are the best shows for independent artists such as myself. People come there especially for the music so there is no talking, unlike most bars. And more people come, because it is an unusual one-off event and there is a promoter (the host) inviting all their friends, so I can play a city for the first time and still draw a crowd.

What’s involved?
It’s very simple. I bring the music you supply the living room and bring the people. The most important thing is to keep it simple. Don’t try and build a stage in your house, or put up lights, or decorations or try to cook for everyone. The best shows are calm, relaxed, candlelight affairs.

How many people?
I need a minimum of 20 people for it to feel like a show... if you can only get five people together it's not worth it. People will often cancel at the last minute and a few less than you think will always turn up. Sell tickets in advance if possible.

How do I get people to come?
Convincing your friends and their friends to come along is the key. “Jack Stafford is a world troubadour who has been touring for the last two years and visited 40 countries. His music is his journal and he's recorded 8 albums, with biographical songs about the journey, protest songs about the problems in different places, and story songs about the people he's met.”

What is the performance like?
People will ask you what kind of music I play I am a troubadour writing songs about my experiences and local news stories. For audiences that don’t understand English I have fast or more melodic songs. There are also simple sing-alongs. It’s a fun and involving show. Can I play as well? Of course, it would be good to have an opening act play for about 30 minutes. Or if you have friends who want an opportunity to play. That’s often a way to get more people along, if they can bring friends along.

How long is a show?
I usually play two 45-minute sets. A break in the middle lets people stretch there legs. I will try to arrive at 18.00hr. Shows normally start 20.30hr and finish at 23:00hr. But we can time it however fits best with you and your audience

How many people can you play to?
The more the better. Do not worry about too many people coming. 40% of people will cancel last minute. This always happens. Your best friend may swear they're coming but they will get sick the day before, their grandmother will get sick and the car will break down. I've had it many times that the host says 'we can only fit 28 people in' and then they ask exactly that many and turn people away; then they're very embarassed when I have to play to an empty room. A good show needs atmosphere and then comes from a full room. The more crowded the better mood people are in - they feel like they're at a real event. Even in a small bedroom you can fit 50 people in. They will make their own space and even sit on each other. So do your best to get as many people as possible, but above all, don't tell people not to come or that it will be too full.

Do I have to provide food and drink?
Normally it's best if you ask people to BYOB (Bring your own beer), that way you don't have any costs. Some hosts provide food or soft drinks or other extras. It's up to you and your audience.

Where do people sit?
Don’t worry about arranging lots of extra chairs, people can sit on the floor on rolled-up blankets or cushions. This also means that people at the back can see the show.

Does it cost anything?
Normally I ask €10 per person and need a minimum audience of 20 to cover travel expenses. It is best to ask people to pay in advance as a large number usually cancel on the day as with any party.

Do I need a sound system?
Indoors: For indoor concerts I don't need any microphones or speakers. I can sing quite loudly. The audience must be silent though. We will explain that to them before the show starts. A room with a wooden floor has better echo, but any room will suffice. Outdoors: If your concert is outdoors and there are lots of people you might be better to arrange a PA or speaker system. I would need two microphones, one for my voice and one for my guitar (I don't have a pick-up in the guitar).

What about lighting?
Lots of candlelight is best if you can manage it, that always makes a nice atmosphere. If not just a few shaded lights, no bright naked bulbs.

Where do you sleep?
I usually sleep in the house I play in, immediately after the concert - sometimes during the concert. I don't carry a sleeping bag due to lack of space on the bike, and because occasionally it picked up fleas or bed bugs and I was carrying them from house to house. Getting there I usually tour by bicycle. Please give me your address and directions from the main train station so I can navigate.
